Oklahoma OC Hot Board: Who will Venables hire?

By Jason Watkins · November 6, 2026

What changed and why

  • Bobby Petrino ▲ 2
  • Andy Kotelnicki ▼ 1
  • Dean Kennedy ▼ 1

November 6, 10:07 p.m. Central · Bobby Petrino moves from No. 9 to No. 7 (42.4 to 43.4), after opening at No. 11 (39.4). OUInsider and AJ Schulte’s Cover 4 Quarters independently identified him as a candidate. The second published suggestion raised his reporting score from 3 to 4. There is no verified OU contact or interview. His search momentum remains zero.

Oklahoma needs someone who can take responsibility for the entire offense: the scheme, the staff, the quarterback plan and the adjustments when Saturday goes sideways. This board forecasts the hire using reporting, performance, independent offensive leadership, feasibility and search momentum. It is an early, low-confidence forecast. The scores are evidence-weighted index points, not percentage chances.

Jason Witten: serious hiring contender, interim audition; performance ungraded. His official appointment creates an opportunity to earn the permanent job. He has no personal rank or composite score here until tangible college playcalling evidence supports one. OU's first eight games belong to the inherited baseline, not his audition.

How the forecast works

Reporting carries 35 points, three-season performance 25, offensive autonomy 25, feasibility 10 and momentum 5. This is a transparent editorial forecasting heuristic, not a fitted probability model. Personal rankings do not enter the calculation.

Performance uses 10 points for yards/play and five each for team scoring, rushing yards/game and giveaway prevention. Each metric scales linearly between fixed benchmarks and is capped at its point limit. FBS bands: YPP 4.5–7.5; team PPG 15–45; rush YPG 75–275; giveaways/game 2.0 down to 0.3. NFL bands: 4.5–6.5, 15–35, 75–175 and 2.0 down to 0.5 respectively. These are declared model choices, not national percentiles. Season weights are 20% for 2024, 30% for 2025 and 50% for 2026, renormalized over eligible seasons.

Autonomy is five editorial subratings: playcalling ownership, staff leadership, quarterback succession, problem solving and repeatability. Role history supports judgments; private staffing authority remains unverified. Feasibility begins with role-based assumptions: current college OC 6/10, sitting HC or NFL coach 3/10, former HC 8/10. These do not assert willingness or a known buyout.

Reporting stages: research addition 0, published suggestion 3 for one independent outlet, 4 for two and 5 for three or more, official interim audition 10, credible interest/contact 15, interview 23, finalist/offer 30 and official permanent appointment 35. Use the highest supported stage. Momentum is currently zero for every scored candidate because no distinct permanent-search progression was verified. One original report counts once across syndication and reposts. Unread paywalled material is excluded.

Excluded context seasons: Nagle 2024, Brown 2025, Norvell 2025, Dahlen 2024/25 and Kingsbury 2026. Witten is outside scoring. Kelly’s 2025 Raiders tenure remains included using the separate NFL benchmarks; Kingsbury’s 2024/25 Washington seasons use those same benchmarks. Head-coach team output is included as program performance with shared-attribution caution.

The model does not adjust for schedule strength, roster spending or non-offensive points. Team PPG includes defense and special teams. Small score gaps are not meaningful certainty. A new credible contact report moves a suggestion from 3–5 to 15 reporting points and can reshape the order immediately.
