Big 12 Elites Can and Will Compete in NEW Expanded SEC in 2023
With the College Football Conference Landscape Shifting, the chances of Oklahoma and Texas moving into the SEC in 2023 seems more likely than ever.
But can the Sooners and Longhorns compete when they get there? Judging by the way both schools are recruiting, we believe they will, and right away.
We all know the narrative about how mighty the SEC is from top to bottom year in and year out.
But Truth be told, both schools have competed with and beaten even the top-tier schools of the SEC in bowl games, even as the SEC has claimed the most National titles in the College Football Playoff era, while the Big 12 (Oklahoma has reached 4 playoffs since they began but have yet to win a semifinal game).

Still, when going up against the top-tier SEC schools outside of the Playoff in New Year's Six Games in the recent past, Both OU and Texas have shown they are capable of playing with -- and beating -- their SEC counterparts.
Oklahoma routed Florida in the Cotton Bowl in 2020 after the Gators just missed out on a playoff spot with a 52-46 loss to eventual National Champion Alabama in the SEC Championship.
And just the year before, Texas took out the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl after both lost their conference title games to fall a game shy of the CFP.
The same season, Kyler Murray and Oklahoma fell behind 28-0 before mounting a comeback bid against Alabama in Miami that came up short, while in 2018 the Sooners and Baker Mayfield played one of the great playoff games of the era but lost to Georgia in overtime at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Oklahoma's biggest downfall has been poor defense in its trips to playoffs, which is likely to be a problem of the past with the Sooners hiring former Clemson and OU National Championship Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables as its head coach following last year's departure by Lincoln Riley, who is loading up on just what the doctor ordered in recruiting so far, high-level defensive linemen as well as the high-powered offensive talent the Sooners were accustomed to under Bob Stoops and Riley.
Steve Sarkisian is in the midst of a rebuild with the Longhorns and went 5-7 a season ago, but Sark landed a Top 5 recruiting haul for his incoming class, and his 2023 class is shaping up to be in the Top 5 as well and at worst Top 10 in the country on signing day.
What he does with it remains to be seen, but if the Longhorns aren't a contender when the rivals enter the Expanded SEC next season, or at the latest in 2024, it won't be due to a lack of talent.
At the very least, expect traditional Big 12 Elites Oklahoma and Texas A&M, now in its 4th year under Jimbo Fisher and 11th season as a member of the SEC to give Alabama, Georgia, and LSU all they can handle right out of the gate. The Aggies nabbed the top recruiting class in the nation in 2022 -- some rated in the best class in history with four 5-star defensive linemen highlighting the haul -- and Fisher's offenses are routinely among the best in college football.
The Sooners are certainly among college football's Blue-Bloods and are committed to winning at the highest level, and the recruiting boost that appears to accompany impending SEC moves should only make them stronger as well.
Don't expect OU to win 6 straight conference titles as it did through 2020 in the Big 12, but losing 4-straight semifinal games is less likely as well with SEC size and speed on defense to go with what figures to remain a potent offense under new offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.
In the end, we at Nobody's Safe say that moving into the SEC will help the schools more than it hurts them, and don't be surprised if all three former Big 12 contenders begin contending in the SEC immediately upon arrival.
