*Sooners Football Program Had to Completely Break Down in Order for Brent Venables and Staff to be Able to Rebuild the Program*
Lincoln Riley Left the Oklahoma Sooners football program in shambles when he left under the cloak of darkness the day after Bedlam in November of 2021, headed West to take over as head coach of the USC Trojans. The narrative said differently, as following a highly-successful two decades of college football at the University of Oklahoma, the Sooners stumbled to a 6-7 record under first-year head coach Brent Venables.
But Riley didn't leave the Oklahoma program in the shape it was left to him in, as 44% of the roster turned over after Riley left for Los Angeles, including a pair of 5-star quarterbacks and much of a defense that had already underperformed in his final year at the helm of the Sooners.
As Venables tried to warn the OU football fanbase, there were no shortcuts to rebuilding the program. It had to break down completely before it could be turned into a real contender.
