What has Brent Venables done to earn the extension Oklahoma gave him on Friday leading into the Champ U BBQ Weekend?
Here's a summary of some of the reasons Joe Castiglione chose to show his football coach that the University trusts the direction Venables has the program headed in...
First and foremost, OU's 10 wins in Venables second season after the program was gutted of nearly everyone that could have helped the team be successful by Lincoln Riley as he slithered out of town and out to Southern California to take over as USC's head coach.
Mind you, 10 wins is a mark it took Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian 10 years as a head coach to reach (at Washington, USC, and Texas)...
Second, and maybe even more important than the early success on the field is the stellar performance Venables and staff have had on the recruiting trail -- night and day different from soft-as-baby-π© Lincoln Riley, getting defensive studs that can actually allow OU to compete in the SEC -- most importantly in the trenches.
Even as a defensive coach, Venables is still landing better talent on offense than Riley has at SC, too, and just as talented as what Sark is landing in Austin.
You know why I know that? Because OU just beat the best Texas team since 2009 ...
And, by the way, BV's trajectory is higher than Sark's was in his first two seasons at Texas, whether Longhorns fans want to admit it or not.
Six wins in Year 1, with one playable transfer QB and no Bijan, Roschon, or Jalen Ford. Then 10 wins in Year 2, when Sarkisian and Quinn Ewers were still gagging away 5 games in the coach's second season on the 40 Acres.
We know why Texas hates this extension so much... Everyone knows why Texas hate this extension so much.
Because Venables caught Sark in two seasons, and Longhorn fans are scared to death of what its gonna look like when the defensive mastermind has his defense looking like Clemson from 2016-2020 -- which, by the way, starts right now.
Texas should hate it... Because UT is back to MID and there's nothing you can do about it...
