We all have to take a step back from time to time and think about the words we want to speak. Oftentimes, it's best for all involved if we just keep it to ourselves.
Today is NOT one of these times, however, because with Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors closing in on their fourth championship of the past 8 seasons, thanks to Curry's historic Game 4 performance in hostile Boston, then a key contribution two nights later in Game 5 when his team needed it, we MUST put a ridiculous narrative to bed.
The incessant blather from point guard "Purists" who have continually refused to add Curry to their list of All-Time Greats at the point needs to cease and desist. We no longer want to hear "He scores too much to be a true point guard," or "He just likes to run off screens all day, and that's not what your job is at the point."
Whether Steph's square peg way of running the point fits in your round "Pure Point Guard" hole or not, there is no denying his results. And the truth is clear. Curry is one of the Greatest Point Guards to EVER play the game of basketball. End of Story.
Furthermore, Chris Paul fans and old-school analysts that continue to slot Curry behind the Phoenix Suns point on the all-time list of players at the point need to cease and desist, and remove the words "Top 5 All-Time Point Guards" from your descriptors for Paul.
Those words are clearly apt in describing Curry, but way off for a CP3 moniker.
One is a 2-time NBA MVP with six Finals appearances and likely a 4th championship ring going onto his finger following the next two games. The other has made it to just NBA championship series, where he and his team coughed up a 2-0 series lead and lost four straight to the Milwaukee Bucks, then squandered home-court advantage this season and another 2-0 series lead, losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the playoffs.
Nope, these players ARE NOT THE SAME. And however you want a POINT "GOD" to look like, this era's deity at the 1 is Curry, NOT PAUL.
Whatever a point guard used to look like -- Curry destroyed that mold long ago. And on Saturday, he unveiled yet again what an all-time great at the position truly looks like in real life.
It looked like 43 points on 50-percent shooting from the field and 3-point territory, and like one of the best performances by a visiting player in Celtics Playoff history.
It looked like a point guard doing what he does best in a pivotal game that likely decided the series, with the Warriors pulling out a win when despite his main running mates not having their best stuff.
If there's a "Point God" in this NBA era, it's StephenCurry. IT IS NOT Chris Paul, the player many anointed with that label long ago.
