Darian Holmes went over the 1,000-yard mark to cement himself as the top pass-catcher in San Antonio on Saturday, turning in yet another stellar performance for the Warren Warriors as they clinched a berth in the UIL Class 6A Playoffs in two weeks with a 49-35 win over S.A. Stevens.
Holmes, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound Senior Wideout at Warren, continued to lead the way for receivers in City 6A Football, grabbing 7 receptions for 129 yards and 3 Touchdowns for the Warriors as they held off Stevens and added another electric chapter to their amazing turnaround season in 2022.
The win assured Warren of a spot in the playoffs with one game to play in the regular season, just a year after the Warriors stumbled to a 2-8 record -- well out of playoff contention -- while Holmes toiled on the Warren junior varsity team.
Holmes, who has not been ranked by any of the major recruiting services due to being overlooked the past two seasons, has proven he's capable of playing at the next level in his lone year of varsity action, although an offer from a Division 1 school has yet to come his way.
But the senior leads all receivers in the city with 63 receptions (15 more than anyone in District 29-6A) and 1,046 receiving yards (140 yards clear of the next-best total), and his 14 total touchdowns tie him for third-most (non-passing touchdowns) in San Antonio.
Those gaudy totals came via a number of record-setting performances in what can only be described as a true breakout year, like the one he had in the second week of the season when four of the five passes he caught in the game against Laredo went for touchdowns. Then there was a mind-blowing effort in an overtime loss to Harlan a few weeks later when Holmes totaled 19 receptions for 279 yards, a receiving touchdown, a rushing touchdown, and even an unofficial 20th catch resulting in a two-point conversion.
But Holmes remains visibly and verbally unmoved by his own success, and even the seeming lack of interest from college football programs across Texas doesn't seem to bother him either.
"I'm pretty sure I'll play at the next level," he says. "I believe in the work I put in, and I know what I'm capable of, so I feel like somebody will give me a chance."
He has repeatedly downplayed the monumental contribution he has made to Warren's newfound success, too, and rarely does he even acknowledge that football even exists at the collegiate level unless somebody asks him if he wants to play the game after high school... Only then will he express that he absolutely does, though the conversation quickly reverts to his current team and the goals he and his teammates have in front of them.
Holmes will readily tell anyone who wants to listen just how much he's enjoying the ride the Warriors are on, however, and seems to bask in giving most of the credit for the success the team is experiencing to teammates like junior quarterback Antonio Meza, who had 6 touchdown passes against Stevens and leads the district in pass completions, passing yards, and TD passes.
"I'm really proud of these guys, and it's been a total team effort to get where we are," Holmes said. "It's so much fun, but this about more than just a couple of players."
Most would imagine that even with just one season of varsity experience to judge Holmes by, the big-body wideout with amazing hands and an uncanny knack to locate and catch the football at it's high-point would be of value to even top-level programs like Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor or Houston, and surely the University of Texas-San Antonio could utilize his size and skill as it continues to climb the ranks as an up-and-coming program in its own right.
But, again, Holmes will cross that bridge when he reaches it and plans to enjoy this ride for as long as he and the Warriors are on it.
