*Riley's High-Octane Offense Masked Many Deficiencies Within Oklahoma Football Program, And Amplified Them With Each Passing Season He was at Helm*
Jason Watkins outlines the final season at the University of Oklahoma of Lincoln Riley in the special edition of the HOF College Football Podcast. Allow me to clarify my position on current USC head coach and former Oklahoma skipper Lincoln Riley. I am of the belief that there is not another offensive mind quite like his anywhere in the college football country, even from amongst the Mike Leach tree from which he hails. The tweaks he made to the Air Raid are unique to him alone, and he is as good as it gets at putting defenses in jeopardy, especially given the talent he has been blessed with in Norman and now at USC.
But make no mistake, I am of the firm belief that Lincoln Riley's departure for USC -- no matter how sudden, unexpected, or downright shady it may have been -- was a home run for the Oklahoma Sooners.
I certainly consider his career in Norman a successful one. Make that WILDLY SUCCESSFUL.
And no matter who or what you attribute the success of his 6-year run as Bob Stoops' replacement on the Sooner sideline, there is no argument one can make about the results, at least not when it comes to his dominance of Big 12 Conference competition.
He won the Big 12 five years in a row, and narrowly missed an opportunity to win six straight -- the program’s 7th overall -- while falling short of Oklahoma State in the closing moments of his final Bedlam game in November 2021, and along the way guided the Sooners to three consecutive berths in the College Football Playoff.
Again, no matter what metric you use, that is WILDLY SUCCESSFUL.
Still, following the first CFP trip, his teams appeared further away from winning one than any of Bob Stoops' teams before them ... And this is why his departure from the OU sideline, as unseemly as it was for those in and around the Sooner program, was as needed as the details surrounding his late night escape were underhanded.
I am not trying to pretend that I didn’t have similar feelings about Riley as Oklahoma’s head coach to those the SC fanbase has now about him at present. I mean, let’s face it, as fans, I venture to say that the vast majority of us were relieved to hear him cut off Carey Murdock mid-question after the Oklahoma loss in Stillwater on Nov. 27, 2021, when he emphatically stated “I’m not going to be the next head coach at LSU. Next Question.”
But, again, there were clear signs of problems within the OU Program in Riley’s final season… His offense was fantastic, his defenses never were… We thought it was a Mike Stoops problem, but as it turns out, there was more to it than that …
In the end, the machine had to BREAK down completely for us to get the full picture of the problems persisting inside the Switzer Center, because in the midst of all that in-conference success, those deficiencies were making it impossible to win anything outside of Jerry Jones' AT&T Stadium, site of the Big 12 Football Championship.
