In the end, it was all a smoke screen by Peyton Bowens.
Apparently wanting his parents to give him space and allow him to make his own decision regarding where he would play his college football, Bowen went completely off-script in choosing the Oregon Ducks as his destination in front of a national TV audience on Wednesday in Denton, Texas.
While social media and college football talking heads reacted with a shock that was embodied by the look of surprise on the face of Bowen's mother, the Denton Guyer Safety chose to wait to send in his National Letter of Intent to Oregon. Once cooler heads had prevailed, he and his parents were back on the same page about his future.
Despite his family wanting him to choose Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, for Bowen, it was always Oklahoma. And he made it official early Thursday afternoon, sending in his letter of intent to Sooners Coach Brent Venables to put an exclamation point on what was already the deepest class in OU history.
Now maybe the contingent of Oklahoma fans pitching a fit and bemoaning who the Sooners coaching staff was unable to land in recruiting can take a rest from their seemingly never-ending forecast of gloom.
This already was a signing class that could stand as a foundation from which a championship was born. Bowen, one of the country's best 15 players, simply made it even better.
