*Sooners Better Off if Jackson Arnold Isn't Forced Into Role as Starting Quarterback in his Freshman Season*
There has been a lot of talk lately about whether Oklahoma should demote Big 12 Newcomer of the year, Dillon Gabriel, to second string quarterback with incoming 5-Star freshman Jackson Arnold due on campus for the Spring Semester.
The sentiment coming from those in favor of such a move is that they would rather see Arnold's college football learning curve start with Big 12 opponents, rather than defenses of the SEC if -- as expected -- OU and Texas make the move to the league a year early in 2024.
Jason Watkins of the HOF College Football Podcast, an admitted Gabriel backer, is not in favor of such a move unless Gabriel were to sustain an injury, unless of course Jackson goes out and establishes himself as clearly the better player during spring and fall practices, leaving no doubt that he gives Oklahoma the best chance to win a conference championship in 2023.
Otherwise, such a move is an unnecessary gamble when Gabriel led the Sooners offense to an average of more than 36 points per game, and a national ranking in the Top 20 of total offense during his first year in Norman.
