Could Congress be about to END conference realignment as we know it?
In a stunning late-Friday reversal, the SEC and Big Ten threw their support behind the Protect College Sports Act after weeks of opposing major provisions in the bipartisan college sports legislation.
And while much of the debate has centered around NIL, athlete compensation and federal protections for college athletics, the biggest bombshell for college football fans could be buried in the new conference realignment rules.
The latest negotiated framework reportedly includes:
🏈 A 19-school cap for Power Four conferences
🏈 A requirement that a Power Four school moving to another P4 league first spend FIVE SEASONS outside a power conference
🏈 A significantly expanded athlete-compensation structure
🏈 Tougher rules governing school-connected NIL and “associated entities”
🏈 Federal protections and national standards the SEC and Big Ten have spent years seeking
That could dramatically alter the futures of Florida State, Clemson, Miami, North Carolina and other ACC programs that have been linked to future SEC or Big Ten expansion.
Think about it:
The Big Ten already has 18 schools. Under a 19-team limit, there could effectively be ONE seat remaining.
Is that seat being saved for Notre Dame?
The SEC currently has 16, meaning Greg Sankey could theoretically have only three additional spots available.
And if Florida State or Clemson wanted to leave the ACC after the legislation becomes law, could they realistically survive five seasons as an independent before entering the SEC or Big Ten?
Meanwhile, the ACC and Big 12 could suddenly become two of the biggest winners in college athletics, because Congress may accomplish something conference Grant of Rights agreements couldn't:
