Discussions about a possible conference merger between the Big 12 and the Pac-12 broke down Monday, which had reportedly been discussed at length over the past two weeks since the news of USC and UCLA's plans to join the Big Ten Conference in 2024.
Officials from the Big 12 told Pac-12 officials they were no longer interested in exploring the partnership, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.
A Pac-12 source briefed on the conversations said that the Big 12 had expressed interest on Friday in possibly exploring a full merger, Thamel's Story said.
The Pac-12 has been exploring options after the sudden departures of UCLA and USC nearly two weeks ago, and a number of media outlets are reporting Tuesday that the end may be near for the fledgling Pac-12.
The league has just two full years remaining on its underwhelming television deal, and commissioner George Kliavkoff has been diligently exploring creative ways to generate revenue, but without its top media market represented, it's unknown how much, if any, leverage the Pac 12 has in negotiations for the conference television rights.
