*Kliavkoff Has Proven No Match for Brett Yormark and Big 12 in Race for College Football Survival*
When Brett Yormark proclaimed the Big 12 was “Open for Business” at Big 12 Media Days in July of 2021, many snickered at the announcement, and at least a few folks in the media began wondering aloud just how long that would be true.
Despite the fact that outgoing Big 12 Commissioner, Bob Bowlsby, awoke from his slumber shortly after OU and Texas announced their intentions to forgo their responsibilities as the Flagship Schools of the once-mighty league — and finally added four new members the reeling Big 12’s roster — most pundits thought it was too little, too late.
The popular belief among the College Football world was that the best Yormark could deliver was a league of Pomp and Circumstance… A Conference without the Sooners and Longhorns (Owners of 11 national titles between them) seemed far from ever regaining relevance.
Even a show with as many fireworks as a Jay-Z and Beyonce World Tour, painting the Big 12 as “Young and Hip” still appeared destined to simply masquerade as a conference in the “Power 5.” The league would flounder eventually, most of us believed, and would prove before long unable to muster anything beyond “G5.”
With the SEC and Big 10 swelling in their ranks, as well as their member schools’ wallets, the Big 12 may indeed prove to be unable to keep up with the Big Boys. But Yormark has proven he is one, and it’s PAC-12 Conference Commissioner George Kliavkoff who is clearly in over his head, and losing his grip on a conference that only a year ago could have finished off Bowlsby and the reeling Big 12.
After failing to convince his member school presidents to rid themselves of the Big 12 by adding Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas Tech, and TCU to the once proud “Conference of Champions,” Kliavkoff and the PAC-12 gave Yormark and his new league a stay of execution.
