Pressure's on for Sark and Ewers following yet another Longhorn recruiting haul
The University of Texas has continued to find it difficult to find success on the football field for more than a decade, despite big recruiting hauls like the one it experienced in the 2022 cycle, which netted the 2021 No.1-ranked high school recruit Quinn Ewers via the transfer portal from Ohio State.
Ewers, the former Southlake (Texas) Carroll standout whose arm has drawn comparisons to Patrick Mahomes since winning the famed "Elite 11" quarterback competition, has folks who bleed burnt orange striking a familiar tone of late about being the player that turns it all around in Austin for the Longhorns and seemingly-always-embattled head coach Steve Sarkisian.
Then Sark went out and made it harder on himself (or easier on himself, depending on who you ask) by nabbing the top prospect in all the land again, this one with blood matching outright football royalty -- Isidore Newman (Louisiana) star quarterback Arch Manning, who had been linked to Texas all along but recently was rumored to have favored defending national champion Georgia on his short list of schools, which also included perennial power Alabama.

Now things get real for Ewers and Sarkisian. Despite never starting a game or even attempting a pass in college, the expectations for him to have a highly-successful freshman campaign in Austin just reached pressure-cooker status.
With Manning entering the fray in 2023, Ewers can ill-afford even mediocrity in a freshman season that will feature his likely second-ever start coming at home against Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide and Heisman-winning quarterback Bryce Young.
But if Texas doesn't win big under Ewers immediately in 2022, it is not far-fetched to believe that the pressure on Sarkisian to play Manning as a freshman in 2023 won't be heavy. It will be, so fair or not, the heat is on Ewers to make good right out of the gates at Austin, even if the school he chose hasn't done much to warrant those expectations of late.
