*Cowboys Coach Threatens to Remove Reporter's Access Because He Doesn't Approve of Valid Questioning Regarding Team's End-of-Season Collapse*
Oklahoma State Coach Mike Gundy has become a caricature of a college football coach, which is to say he's a "Coach" in name only aside from the fact that he still draws a very real paycheck, though the responsibilities that are outlined in his yearly-renewing 5-Year Perpetual deal with OSU that pays him nearly $8 Million per season to perform are -- at best -- being mailed in at this point.
Recruiting isn't high on his list of priorities these days (OSU's signed class of 17 recruits this offseason ranks 63rd in the 247 Composite Rankings without a single 4-Star recruit in the bunch, and the highest-rated recruit in the fold for 2023 is QB Zane Flores of Nebraska, ranked 467th overall in 247 Sports' Composite ranks).
Judging by Gundy's (non)-reaction to the Cowboys' freefall in the second half of the conference season in 2022, and the utter indifference to the fact that multiple starters with remaining eligibility chose to leave his program for greener pastures, it would appear that winning isn't overly important to Gundy anymore, either.
The coach barely acknowledged the defection of four-year starter at quarterback Spencer Sanders to the transfer portal, nor did he complain that leading tackler Mason Cobb was heading out to Southern California to play for Lincoln Riley, even though Riley's teams are known as much for defensive efficiency as Phoenix is regarded as one of the country's best destinations for Winter Sports.
Former OSU defensive lineman Trace Ford may have ignited the ire of the OSU fan base for choosing Norman and the hated Oklahoma Sooners as his transfer destination this week, but that news was met with a blank stare by Gundy himself (at least, publicly), and there isn't much visible scrambling happening out in Stillwater to replace some of the key pieces lost to the portal, which apparently happened because the players no longer believe winning is a priority for Gundy or his program.
That, too, is an understandable conclusion by the players in view of the fact that only a question about the possibility of staff changes elicited any emotion from Mediocre Mike following OSU's uninspired performance in a loss to Wisconsin in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl last week.
The question received a sharp response from Gundy that included a threat of pulling the reporter's press credential, as well as calling the OSU beat reporter ignorant, even as most journalists would consider the question fair to ask considering the team's precipitous fall from contention for the Big 12 title after getting a gift win over Texas in their homecoming game and taking over sole possession of second place in the league standings prior to losing four of their last five games.
Included in the OSU reversal was a loss to the worst Oklahoma team in 20 years in Bedlam, as well as a 48-0 dismantling by Kansas State, as well as losses to Kansas and West Virginia.
It would appear that none of those things matter to Gundy, but having the nerve to question how the coach might turn things around in his program will certainly draw a sharp response.
Ah, to be the King of Mediocrity.
